Beat the Heat!

Temperatures are on the rise and it is important to think about how our dogs are coping. Heatstroke is also a very real danger to dogs, here are a few thing to look for and what we can do to help.

Signs of heatstroke include:

• Excessive panting
• Dark or bright red gums and tongue
• Sticky or dry tongue and gums
• Staggering, seizures or lethargy
• Bloody diarrhoea or vomiting
• Rapid heart rate

Flat nosed, heavy coated and large breeds are more susceptible. Also, older dogs and those prone to respiratory diseases.

What can we do?

• Provide fresh cool water to drink and if you go out take a bottle of water both you and your dog!
• If pouring water over them or allowing them to bathe, provide cool water instead of cold.
(very cold water will constrict blood vessels and impede cooling)
• Provide shaded areas outside and cool tiles or a fan inside will help them rest.
• Frozen treats provide stimulating fun while keeping them cool.
• Games that are mentally challenging will help keep them occupied while avoiding the heat.
• Keep walking to a minimum; remember if it’s too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for them!
• And remember, never leave your dog in a car! Even with windows open, temperatures inside a car can rise quickly and be much higher than the air outside.

Encouraging dogs to drink is also important stay hydrated and decrease the risk of dehydration. See our blog for the full article!
