When your puppy is ready to move onto adult food, it’s best to make the change gradually over 7–10 days. Start by mixing a small amount of adult food with their usual puppy food, then slowly increase the adult food each day while reducing the puppy food.
This gentle change helps your dog’s digestion adjust and can reduce the chance of an upset stomach. Every puppy is different, so take it a little slower if needed.
Most puppies can move on to adult food at around 12 months of age, but this can vary depending on their breed, size and individual development. Smaller breeds often mature a little earlier, while larger breeds may benefit from staying on puppy food for longer to support their slower growth rate.
When making the change, introduce adult food gradually over 7–10 days, mixing it with their puppy food and slowly increasing the amount. This helps avoid digestive upset and gives your puppy time to adjust. If you’re unsure, your vet can advise based on your dog’s breed, weight and condition.
