Every year hundreds of historic buildings, museums, gardens and cultural landmarks across the UK open their doors to visitors with many offering free entry. The best part? Some of these wonderful heritage sites welcome dogs too!
We are incredibly lucky to have so many fascinating historic places on our doorstep including many that are dog friendly.
Recently Purdy and Panther had the pleasure of visiting the beautiful Belton House and they absolutely loved exploring the grounds! Purdy has also been lucky enough to help out at another historic house in the area during a charity event where she was showered with cuddles and treats, as you can imagine she loved every minute!
Planning your visit to heritage sites.
Are you planning a dog friendly day out at a historic house, garden or heritage site?
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Check the pet policy
Not every heritage site welcomes dogs so always check before you travel. Look out for information such as dogs welcome, dog friendly or dogs allowed on leads on the venue’s website or social media. - Plan your route and timings
- Keep your dog secure and under control
A secure lead is essential particularly at busy events. It is also a good idea to make sure your dogs ID tag and microchip details are up to date just in case you become separated. - Pack the essentials
A little preparation can make your day much easier. Don’t forget:
Think about your dog’s personality and energy levels. Some dogs thrive in busy, bustling environments however others are much happier somewhere quieter and more relaxed.
If possible, check whether there are dog friendly parks, walking routes or quiet areas nearby where your dog can stretch their legs and have a breather.
A well exercised dog is often calmer and more settled in a new environment. A good walk and toilet break before arriving can make the experience more enjoyable for everyone.
When exploring historic places with your dog remember that you are sharing these special spaces with other visitors.
- Always clean up after your dog
- Keep them close and under control
- Don’t allow your dog to approach strangers withput permission
- Be mindful of barking, particularly where a peaceful atmosphere is expected
- Follow the venues rules and respect the gardens, buildings and other visitors
- Most importantly, enjoy the experience together.
